Bharadwaja
Maharishi
Not
only was he one of the vedic rishis, Bharadwaja was also one of the Saptarishis
of the present Manvantara. Born to Brahaspati he was very knowledgeable and
there was no end to his thirst for knowledge. He was known to have worked for
peace and harmony throughout his life.
THE
GOTRA
He
is also accredited with the Bharadwaja Gotra, and the Bradardwaja Brahmins are
known to be the highest class of Brahmins. People in his gotra are said to have
warrior like quality as the sage married a Kshatriya girl named Suseela. This
union is called Anuloma marriage, where the children although born to a brahmin
father take the characteristics of the Kshatriya mother. The Brahmins of this
gotra are thus also called as Brahma-Kshatriyas. Brahaspati was the son of Sage
Angirasa and together with Bharadwaja the three are known as the Traya Rishis
of the Bharadwaja gotra, which has about 1,400 branches today.
HIS
BIRTH
Bharadwaja
was born to Sage Brihaspati and his sister in law (Illegally). He was adopted
by Bharata, the son of Sakuntala and Dushyanta. The Marudganas found this child
on the banks of river Ganges who was shining in brilliance/radiance. The
celestial voice told them that the child was divine and they took him under
their care and brought him up with all their love. They conducted the sacred
thread ceremony and taught him all what they knew. This beloved child of the
gods was none other than sage Bharadwaja. But they couldn’t quench his thirst
for knowledge they guided him to Indra and Shiva.
BLESSINGS
FROM INDRA
He
did austere penance to please Indra, who pleased with the devotion appeared
before him. The penance was so great that he gave up food and water and nothing
affected him be it heat or cold, rain or storm, he continued his penance.
In
spite of the repeated blessings from Indra after repeated penances and
austerities, his quest for knowledge did not end. Finally when Indra appeared
again in front of Bharadwaja there also appeared three mountain-sized masses of
radiance. Indra picked a handful from each mass and gave it to Bharadwaj into
him palms. This mass was quickly absorbed into him and he shown with a brilliance
untold and he felt a new vigor. Indra explained to him that the three mountain
like mass represented the three Vedas and even with a handful of it, he shone
with more radiance than the gods. He explained that knowledge was boundless. .
Sparsely clothed but with a serene face that emitted radiance he returned to
the Marudgunas and prostrated before them and took their blessings.
He
gave back to the world this knowledge of the Vedas he was blessed with and
worked toward the welfare of the people.
AS
BHARATA’S SON
We
are all familiar with the story of Dushyant and Sakuntala. Their son was
Bharata in whose lineage the Pandavas were born was equal in valor to Indra and
was a very righteous king. His wife Sunandadevi was a very pious and a chaste
woman. Unfortunately they had no children and those who were born to them did
not survive. They even performed the Maruisoma Sacrifice to beget children on
the banks of river Ganges. The Marudgunas along with Bharadwaja reached the
place where the sacrifice was happening. Marudgunas made a suggestion to King
Bharata. They suggested that he adopt Bharadwaja who they told was very
brilliant and belonged to the Angiras lineage. And thus Bharadwaja was adopted
by King Bharata.
Bharata
on his part was very happy. When he came of age he was married to a Kshtriya
princess Suseela, a very beautiful and righteous woman well-suited for
Bharadwaja. He was proclaimed the crown prince. Bharadwaja was least interested
but Bharata did not have any other children. Bharadwaja decided to do something
about it. He decided to invoke Agni and helpthe king get a child. His prayers
were answered and King was blessed with a baby boy who was named Bhimanyu.
Unfortunately around the time of his birth Bharata died, so Bharadwaja stayed
on in the kingdom and took care of Bhimanyu till came of age, handed him the
kingdom and retired to the life he loved the most.
DEFEAT
OF VAARASHIKHA AND SAMBHARA
Bharadwaja
was the Royal priest for Abhyavarti, son of Chayamanana and Divodasa, king of
the Kashi. One he happened to go Mount Kailas to meet up with Bhrigu at his
hermitage. He took the pilgrimage by foot and en-route he saw that people were
being harassed by evil power in the name of demons Vaarashikha and Shambara.
Everywhere murder, extortion, torture and immoral behavior had become part of
their daily life . . . there was strife everywhere. He wanted to bring peace to
the people.
Parama
was the eldest of Varashikas and he had hundred younger brothers. The lived in
and around the banks of river Hariyoopeeya. To add to their atrocities, they
were also masters in a secret warfare where they could shield themselves from
the arrows through invisible protective armors. In one of their plunders they
invaded the land of King Abhyavarti. There nothing they did not do to provoke
the sanity of the people. They looted killed and plundered and did not even
spare the women and children.
With
the help of King Divodasa (was also called Prastoka) a friend, King Abhyavarti
fought the demon, but unfortunately the odds were against them and they
retreated to hiding from these Demons and sought refuge at Sage Bharadwaja’s
Ashram.
Seeing
the two kings in this pathetic state, he was not at all sympathetic, he was
angry that the kings resorted to flee the scene rather than fight back, the
kings who were supposed to be pillars of strength, were so weak.
He
prompted them to fight back but they were helpless, with no money or treasure
even to cloth the soldiers. Sage Bharadwaja invoked lord Indra and with the
help of Aswini Kumaras he got the wealth needed to fight back the demons.
Abhyavarti and Divodasa prostrated before Bharadwaja and got the confidence to
fight back. They defeated Varashikas and freed the people the demons had
imprisoned.
Sambhara
Meanwhile
here when Sambhara heard of his friend death, he was infuriated. He was the
ruler of the kingdom close to Kashi and his prime enemy was its ruler Divodasa.
Before Divodasa got back to the kingdom, he plundered and looted Kashi leaving
it in shambles.
Divodasa
returned to the kingdom as soon as he heard of the attack but by the time he
reached it was rather too late. He was mentally devastated seeing the pathetic
state of his kingdom. Sage Bharadwaja came to his rescue again. He insisted
that Divodasa invoke the King of Gods and seek his luck. Thus, Indra appeared
before him quite pleased with the Yagna and blessed him with all he wanted to
defeat this demon. The ferocious war raged between Divodasa and Varashikas and
finally with one arrow Divodasa managed to cut his head off and thus kill the
Varashika leader. Thus righteousness was restored to the world. And Abhyavarti
and Divodasa became ardent followers of the sage and have their names mentioned
in the Vedas.
PRATARDANA,
SON OF DIVODASA
Both
of them washed their guru’s and his son Sage Garga feet and offered him lots of
wealth which the sage hesitatingly accepted and later distributed it amongst
the poor and needy.
Vatsa
was an adjoining kingdom of Kashi ruled by Veetahavya. He was a good ally of
Divodasa. As time passed his pride grew as with number of his children and
grandchildren to support him. Here Divodasa was getting old and was childless.
The Vatsa kingdom, knowing of this helpless state of matters attacked Kashi
King and defeated them. Divodasa and his family managed to escape capture and
took shelter at the hermitage of Sage Bharadwaja. Hearing his plight the sage
felt sorry for him and compelled him perform religious rituals to beget a
child.
His
prayers were answered and in due course his wife gave birth to a baby boy
Pratardana, who eventually became famous as a virtuous person. Sage Bharadwaja
took it on himself to train this boy in the art of warfare, Vedas, and other
philosophies. By the age of 13 Pratardana had gathered up an army of youngsters
in the forest and was ready for a war against the kingdom of Vatsa and the
Veetahavyas. A fierce battle was fought between the two on the banks of river
Ganges and Pratardana managed to eliminate his enemies and reestablish the
kingdom. Veetahavya alone survived; humbled by the turn of events, took refuge
at Sage Brigu’s feet and decided to become an ascetic. Pratardana followed him
to the hermitage but returned when he realized the intentions of Veetahavya.
WITNESSING
THE DIVINE DANCE
Lord
of the devas Indra asked Bharadwaja to to seek the blessing of Lord Shiva for
his Yagna which was equivalent to mastering the Vedas. For that purpose he went
to see Lor Shiva at Kailash. He witnessed the Lord engrossed in the divine
dance with Parvati Devi. As he approached the Devi smiled at him. He waited for
days together for them to finish the dance and by that time the sage who was
waiting without food water and sleep collapsed.
