Types of Worship

Obligatory Worship (Nitya Karma)

These worships comprise the daily routine and are mandatory to all.

Although the daily worship does not produce any merit, but failure to perform such worship brings demerit. The following are the part of Obligatory Worship

·         Regular daily bathing

·         The ceremony of saluting the Sun and reciting the Gāyatri mantra and worshiping the Lord.

Periodic Worship (Naimittika Karma)

Periodic Worship made on on special occasions, such as Temple festivals (utsavas) and holy / auspicious days (parvas) which are prescribed in the Spiritual Discourses.

Desirous Worship (Kāmya Karma)

Desirous Worships are further classified into two categories:-

·         svaartha — for the benefit of the worshipper

·         paraartha — for the benefit of others.

Unmotivated Worship (Niṣkaamya Karma) 

An Unmotivated Worship is done without any desire or for any personal gain but merely to praise the Lord. This type of worship is the most precious and most commendable form of worship. In unmotivated worship the efficacy is based entirely upon the devotion of the worshipper, there is no fear of loss, and imperfect or unruly methods of worship are acceptable.
