Characteristics of Mankind (Gunas)
The characteristics or Gunas of human being are classified into
three main categories. These are postulated to account for the diversity of
experience. Those are Sattva Guṇa, Rajasa Guṇa, and Tamasa Guṇa. Let us study
about each type of characteristics in human being.
The Satva Guna devoids of
excitement. The mind remains in equilibrium status whatever may happen. It remains
motionless and without any anxiety. it will be without any action or reaction.
It manifests itself delightfully (prakāśa).
The Main Characteristics of
Satva Guna are:- Balanced Mind, Knowledge, Harmony, Cheerfulness, Healthy, Compassionate,
Peacefulness, Calmness and Love without any expectation.
The Rajasa Guna mind is
activating and exciting potency. Its intention is to move things, overcome
resistance, overcome obstacles and complete the task at any cost. This kind of
Guna is responsible for all actions and the cause of every kind of change that
takes place throughout nature.
The Main Characteristics of
Rajasa Guna are:- Action, Wisdom, Forceful, Heat, Temperament, Drive, Pursuit, Motivation,
Creative, Gradient, Looking for Details and Facts, Constructive, Solution.
Tamasa Guna represents “darkness”,
a force that restrains, obstructs, and encircles the other two Gunas by
counter-acting against the tendency of Rajasa Guna, to do work and against the
tendency of Sattva Guna to reveal. Tamasa Guna’s nature is dullness and to
resist any motion or action. It attracts the downward pull of the earth and has
the tendency of water to descend. It is the cause of mass, heaviness and inactivity.
Tamasa Guna makes it possible to feel invisible air.
The Main Characteristics of
Tamasa Guna are:- Sound Sleep, Inactivity, lack of common sense, illusion, idleness,
lazy, postponing the tasks, dullness, fall, lack of motivation, negligence of
duty, obliteration, termination.
These three characteristics or
Gunas of the creatures are the root cause of every kind of change in this
universe.
