Bhairava Ashtami or Kala-Bhairava Ashtami, the birthday of the
Lord Kal Bhairav, a dreadful and furious appearance of the Lord Maheswar. It
falls during the month of Karthik (Margashira Month) during the waning phase of
moon that is Jrishna Paksha Ashtami Thithi. Hence any Krishna Paksha Ashtami
thithi are considered as sacred days of Bhairava.
Bhairava is a appearance of Shiva's fury. History says that when
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were discussing in seriously as to who was superior
among them. As the argument went very heated, Lord Shiva felt insulted by the
remarks made by Brahma then the fiery Kal Bhairav appeared from the angry
Shiva's third eye and cut off one of Brahma's five heads, leaving him with only
four heads. Brahma’s head got stuck to Kal Bhairav’s left palm due to the sin
of cutting Lord Brahma’s head. Hence Kalbhairav, the incarnation of Lord Shiva,
got the “Brahmahatya Dosha” curse for Brahminicide. To do penance to get rid of
“Brahmahatya Dosha”, Bhairava had to wander around the universe as an unclad
begger holding the skull of Lord Brahma’s head as the begging bowl. Kal
Bhairav's sin was finally got apologized by Lord Brahma when he reached the
divine Punya Theertha “Varanasi”, where we can see the Kal Bhairav temple even
today.
