The Saintly Siva Vakkiyar is one
among the eighteen Maharishis. It is believed that Siva Vakkiyar born in
Tamilnadu. His life span was not clearly mentioned anywhere. There are
different opinions about Siva Vakkiyar’s life span somewhere it is mentioned he
lived during 9th century and some says 10th century. But it is true that Siva
Vakkiyar has written maximum number of poetries among all Maharishis.
Siva Vaakkiyar was well versed inSaiva, Vaishnava, Budhdha and Jain Culture and Shashtras. His poetries are
enchanting and enlightening and had unique views spiritualism. Siva Vakkiyar
did not believe worshiping god in the form of a statue. His poetries kept
arguing about statue worshiping. He questions that when the god is within every
human being and the god is omnipresent,
why should one worship a statue.
Usually when a child gets its
birth it keeps crying “Ma Ma” whereas Siva Vakkiyar at the time of his birth
kept crying “Siva Siva” hence he was named as Siva Vakkiyar.
Siva Vakkiyar had an inborn
talent and knowledge on cosmic rules and spirituality. Initially there were
many people considered Siva Vakkiyar as an Atheist by wrongly understanding his
poetries.
One of his prominent poems – If
you merely consider a stone as god and by worshiping it with flowers while
chanting Mantras, will that stone understand your problems ? Will that stone
speak to you, while the god is within yourself? Will the vessel in which you
cook the food ever knows the taste of the food? Like the food inside the
vessel, the god is within you, and like the vessel doesn’t know the taste of
food, the human being also never knows the power of god that remains within
himself!
